People are generally unaware that some essential and fragrance oils can cause problems in some circumstances and situations with various health conditions.
Which Oils may cause Skin Irritations?
Firstly NO essential Oils should be used directly on the skin as they are extremely concentrated and are absorbed into the body. There are a number of Oils which can cause irritation of the skin, even when blended with a base Oil such as Sweet Almond. Also depending on the sensitivity of the particular person. Some common examples Lavender (spike), Lemon, Orange, Lime, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Peppermint, Oregano and Marjoram are frequently used.
The Oils which are most likely to irritate the skin are generally very fresh and uplifting fragrances. The last thing people would think about is the possibility of coming out in a rash using a Citrus scented Body Lotion for example. These days many people are buying massage books and using lovely oils to massage friends and loved ones without being aware of the contraindications of many of the essential oils. Especially as it's being used directly onto the skin.
Pregnancy- Oils to Avoid
During Pregnancy some women and their bodies are much more sensitive than others but there are many Oils to be avoided. In very extreme cases where the mother has a history of miscarriage for example certain oils absorbed into the body may cause another miscarriage.
Some of the Oils to be avoided are the same as for the Skin Irritants plus others like Eucalyptus. Rosemary, Sage, Oregano, parsley seed, Sweet Marjoram. Just a note, a lot of the Oils I'm mentioning a from plants which are used in cooking. There is no need to stop using Herbs in cooking or drinking fruit juices. The Oils when distilled become extremely concentrated but in normal food preparation the herbs and fruits etc are fine.
High Blood Pressure-Epilepsy- Don't use these Oils
Because the skin absorbs Oils used during massage etc Blood Pressure and other medical conditions can be worsened using certain Oils. These Oils are Rosemary, Sage, Thyme or Hyssop. Eplileptics should not use, Sweet Fennel, Hyssop, Rosemary, Sage and Wormwood. Generally these Oils would not be used in massage as they aren't the most suitable fragrances for Relaxation or easing Muscle pain.
With the above Medical Conditions of Pregnancy, High blood pressure and Epilepsy also Avoid using the Oils which are contraindicated in Oil Burners etc. I must say also that the Oils which i listed to be Skin irritants can also be irritating on respiratory systems. I used to use a mix of Sandalwood, Lavender and Orange, It smelt awesome and was a real mood lifter but the Orange was quite irritating on the breathing and caused coughing so I had to make sure I only used 2 drops compared to about 10 or each of the other 2 fragrances.
Make sure you read All labels carefully. Avoid using Essential Oils around Children and Pets. Essential Oils are Flammable so obviously don't use around the open fire and store them in a cool dark area. Always dilute with a carrier oil (sweet almond).
