Recycling Candles and Go Green

Have you ever purchased a candle(s) that had a fragrance you loved and when you have gone back to get more they are discontinued or simply unavailable? Unfortunately I have experienced this more than once and perhaps it was one of the reasons I decided to make my own candles. Nevertheless, I learned a great little trick and want to share it with you. Basically what you are doing is is quite simple, recycling used candles. I use this technique for three reasons, a unique color, a fragrance and sometimes simply to save time.

Let me explain. Have you ever come across a beautiful colored candle and it burnt unevenly (a problem I'll discuss in another article) or it burnt too quickly. Whatever the case may be I do this cool little trick. Take the remainder of the candle or candles and cut them up in small chunks. Using the same process as you would when making a new candle, melt down the wax in a double boiler or crock pot. After the wax has melted pour into your mould and place a new wick in.

This is great way to re-enjoy that beautiful colored candle. It also allows you to create the size and/or shape you may need. This is also a great technique to give new life to those half burnt candles you have around. I remember once purchasing candles that had an incredible fragrance. I enjoyed them so much I went to purchase more (and I don't purchase candles, I create them) however much to my dismay, they no longer carried them. I was so disappointed. So here's what I did. I took the remainder of the candles I had, chopped them up and put them in a plastic container. I then went to my computer and searched until I found the fragrance oil I was looking for.

Using my handy recycling trick and With the help of my trusty double boiler and mold I reinvented my favorite scented candle. Now here's a little trick to save time and money. Never throw away used candles. Chop them up and store in a plastic container. Be sure to keep colors and if they have a fragrance separated (unless you want to really created something unique). Keep your favorite or molds handy and in a pinch you can reinvent a candle in a matter of a few hours. I have had so much fun recreating new candles from my old ones. Not only are they money saving but they allow you to be creative without any cost. It is also the perfect way to experiment, with mixing colors, scents etc. Happy Candle Making!
