Essential Oils - Did You Know the Fragrance of Christmas Trees Can Be Healing?

Balsam, pine, spruce, fir-all of these are favorites for decorating at the holiday season. But did you know that their fragrance can be healing as well?

All of these trees possess a life blood that we call "essential oils." This lifeblood protects the tree from invading bacteria and viruses, and helps heal wounds from traumas. When this lifeblood is extracted through steam distillation, we discover that it has tremendous healing qualities that can aid us as well. First of all this essential oil contains hundreds of different chemical compounds known to be anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and immune stimulating. Each tree is unique and therefore possesses a unique chemistry that identifies it as pine or spruce or balsam. Let's take a look at some of these essential oils.

Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) is the traditional "Christmas tree." It has the wonderful aroma that we have come to identify with winter and holiday celebrations but it actually has a history that goes back to the time of the Egyptians. It was one of the oils found in King Tutankhamun's grave and is now thought to be the "Balm of Gilead." Balsam or fir was actually mentioned 18 times in the Bible. Can you guess that it's good for the respiratory and muscular systems?

Spruce (Picea mariana) Traditionally the Lakota Indians used spruce to strengthen their ability to communicate with the Great Spirit. The fragrance was thought to bring prosperity. It has antispasmodic, antiparasitic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory properties and is an immune stimulant. You can use this oil to fight fungal infections like candida, sinus-respiratory infections, arthritis, sciatica and lumbago. This is a great rejuvenator and can be used in saunas, steam baths and added to massage products. It can help to re-energize sore muscles.

Pine (Pinus sylvestris) has a strong dry turpentine-like odor. The best pine oil comes from the Scotch pine and is the safest and most therapeutic of the pine oils. Pine is also mentioned in the Bible. In biblical times, these fragrant trees were used primarily for building. Traditionally, pine oil has been used for the respiratory system particularly for "old coughs." But it is good for problems like asthma, pulmonary infections, bronchitis, diabetes, severe infections, arthritis and sinusitis. It also has great first aide ability for cuts, cysts, fatigue, gout, lice, nervous exhaustion, scabies, skin parasites, sores, stress and urinary infections. Pine oil is great in the bath as a rejuvenator for fatigue.

How Can You Bring the Healing Fragrance of These Tress Into Your Home?

Today-most people do not go out into the forest to chop down their Christmas tree. Instead we get our trees out of a box that has been in storage for the past year. Try diffusing one of these great oils in your home. Don't have a diffuser? Here are some suggestions:

o Place a few drops on a coffee filter and set it in the room
o Put a few drops on a cotton ball and stuff it in your heating vent
o Place a few drops in water and set it on your table
o Use scented candles ONLY if made with therapeutic quality oils (perfume grade oils not recommended)
o Place a few drops in a small dish or saucer away from little fingers (do not use the candle burners-this scorches the oil and destroys the healing factors)
