How Much Fragrance Oil is Required to Make My Scented Candles?

When you learn how to make scented candles correctly, you will have added another art to your collection. It is an art because you can't simply pour fragrance in the mix and expect it to be perfect. It is similar to perfume. Some women use the right amount to smell pleasant while others seem to bathe in it.

When you buy fragrance or essential oils, take some time to decide on a brand. This is not to imply one manufacturer is any better than another. It is just important to stick with one kind. You won't be able to get consistent results if you use different brands in your candle batches.

With scented candles, you are looking for two things: how they smell after they are made, and how they smell when they burn.

Some candle makers add fragrance after their candles are made. They do this by using an ice pick to poke holes vertically in the wax, and then pour the oils in the holes. This can only be done with container candles that have soft wax. It is a haphazard way to scent candles, and doesn't always give the same results.

Remembering the lady who uses too much perfume, start out with less on your first candle and add incrementally to that on future candles if you don't feel it is strong enough. When you have made your first scented candle, get the advice and opinion of several people on how they think the candle smells at the two states, burning and non-burning.

With fragrance oils, use 1/2 to 1 ounce of oil to 4 pounds of wax, liquid measure. If you use essential oils, the same amounts will hold true. If you use a scent disk instead of the fragrance oil, you will need 1 to 2 ounces per 4 pounds of wax, measured by weight. Be sure that the oil is mixed well into the wax, or your candle won't burn steadily and may even go out.

Don't expect your first candle to be exactly the way you want it. It may take several attempts to get the results for which you are striving. You may even want to change to another brand of fragrance oil if your first choice isn't potent enough. The Mona Lisa probably was not Leonardo's first work, and just as he had to improve with experience, so do you.

Keep written records of the amounts of fragrance you use in each candle so you know how to adjust future candle mixtures. Stick with a certain brand for all the candles you make. Listen to the advice of your friends as to how strong the fragrance is, and if the fragrance is a good one. Learning how to make scented candles is a progressive thing. You will get better as you persevere.
