Jasmine and Its Sweet Fragrance

Jasmine is a climbing, trailing, or spreading flowering shrub that comes from the olive family. It is a native of the tropical and warm temperate regions of the earth. It is believed to have originated from the Himalayas in western China. All the jasmine species have shiny dark green leaves and grows small white or yellow flowers. The flowers are generally scented and blossom in clusters with small berries.

Jasmine is known all over the world especially in the tropics because of its distinctive sweet fragrance. It is extensively harvested for its shiny leaves and lovely bunch of fragrant flowers. Its fragrance is usually released at hours of darkness after the sun has set and most especially when the moon is shining towards fullness. The buds are even more sweet-smelling than the flowers. There is what they call a true and false jasmine. These two flowers are commonly mistaken for each other because of the same strong scent that the flowers discharge. The true jasmine has elliptical and shiny leaves with tubular-shaped glossy white flowers. They belong to the Oleaceae family, which can be a bushy shrub or climbing vine that is not poisonous. The false jasmine, in contrast, comes from a different genus, Gelsemium, and family, Loganiaceae. They are considered to be poisonous when eaten. The fragrant oil in a jasmine is consisting of benzyl acetate, terpinol, jasmone, benzyl benzoate, and linalool. In Hawaii, it is known as pikake for its equally strong scent.

The jasmine plant and the important oil extracted from the flowers are being used widely in cosmetic and perfumery. The oil has relaxing and aphrodisiac properties. It works in calming and sedating an individual to relax and live healthy. Its aphrodisiac property enhances a person's sexual desire. The sweet-smelling fragrance of a jasmine does not only serve its purpose but helps restore a person's overall mood.
