I used to use a mix of Sandalwood, Lavender and Orange, It smelt awesome and was a real mood lifter but the Orange was quite irritating on the breathing and caused coughing so I had to make sure I only used 2 drops compared to about 10 or each of the other 2 fragrances.

True these days we are bombarded with new perfume launches every time we go to the shops. There are literally thousands of different fragrances.

How do you pick which is right for you? Perfume is a very personal choice. What suits one person may not suit another. 1) Floral

8) Watery

Once you have decided on the perfume you like you have a further choice. What strength you want your perfume to be.

Here are your choices:

PERFUME - The strongest, longest-lasting fragrance form. Apply at all the pulse points; wherever you feel the beat of the heart, behind your ears, the nape of your neck, at the base of your throat, at the bosom, the inside bend of your elbows, at the inside of your wrists and behind your knees. The heat of the body at these points will assure a well-balanced fragrance application. It usually comes in a dab on bottle. This form will last on the skin for 8-12 hours.

EAU DE PARFUM - One of the most common forms of fragrances to be found in many of the fine fragrance collections. It should be smoothed or sprayed just before dressing. This usually is a spray bottle and it lasts on the skin 6 - 8 hours.

EAU DE TOILET - Usually less concentrated than Eau de Parfum, it should be applied in exactly the same way as Eau de Parfum. Always in a spray bottle and will last on the skin 4 - 6 hours.

COLOGNE- The lightest form of fragrance. Perfect for splashing liberally all over the body. It is the perfect refreshant. It does not last very long on the skin.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the different choices available to you it's time to hit the fragrance counter. But go slowly. Our noses only recognize up to three smells only. So don't go dousing yourself in twenty different perfumes. Once you have tried on three different smells on your skin walk away.

Leave the perfume area as the air is full of smells here. Leave the perfume on your skin for ten minutes before smelling it again. This way you should have a sense of the true fragrance. If you still like it you're on to a winner.

Note: Never rub your wrists together after spraying your perfume. This bruises the fragrance notes and you will not get the true perfume.

My Fragrance Voyage - My Personal Views of Kiton Black, Saks Fifth Avenue and Tom Ford - A Review

My fragrance "wardrobe" needed to be updated since it was getting a bit old. I felt that I needed to add a new cologne to my collection. After reading many reviews, I narrowed my choices to three fragrances: Bond No. 9 Saks Fifth Avenue for Men, Tom Ford for Men and Kiton Black.

I began my journey at in the Fashion Show Mall, which is located on the fabulous Las Vegas Strip. Since these colognes were (and still are) very fine, I figured that Saks would have them all. My first candidate was the trendy store's namesake, Bond No. 9 Saks Fifth Avenue for Men. According to a press release by this niche perfumer, this cologne is "a blend of Sicilian bergamot, cardamom, amber, and cedarwood, making it 'an elegant aqua scent.'" So, my expectations were quite high; I expected it to smell just as good as my favorite fragrance, Chanel Pour Monsieur.

When I arrived to Saks, I immediately went to the Bond No. 9 counter and was greeted by a tall and beautiful brunette. I told her that I wanted to try Saks Fifth Avenue for Men. She sprayed it on a Bond No. 9 sample fragrance card, gave it to me and I sniffed. I was very, very disappointed. At this price -- it costs about $185 for a 3.4 oz bottle -- I expected a lot more. It just smelled too commercial for me. In other words, its scent was like most citrus-based mid-priced designer colognes on the market. I expected more complexity and wanted to smell the "upscale-ness" of the store that it represented. The fragrance adviser saw my expression and she just told me that some people liked it while others didn't.

After that disappointing moment, I asked about Kiton Black. She looked a little confused at first, and she asked another adviser about it. She sadly told me that Saks in Vegas didn't carry it. I sighed and asked about Tom Ford for Men. She led me to another sales person, who presented this fragrance to me. She sprayed it on a Tom Ford sample sheet and gave it to me so I could sniff it. This one was a winner and certainly was an improvement over his first fragrance for women, Black Orchid. It was nearly on the same level as Chanel's Pour Monsieur or Hermes's Terre d' Hermes. It was sophisticated, complex and very masculine. Tom Ford had truly made a classic cologne. Of course, as a lover of men, he should create a fragrance that would increase the sex appeal of all men. This one was obviously on my list.

The Fragrance Directory by the Fragrance Foundation states that Tom Ford describes his namesake as being "'slightly dirty, sensual, sexy smell. It's not the same as natural musk used to be, but it has a bit of something that some people would think slightly dirty,' Ford said. 'I think it's warm and sensual.'" This sexy fragrance begins with lemon leaf, violet, ginger, bergamot, basil and mandarin notes. Its middle notes are orange blossom, black pepper, tobacco, and grapefruit. It ends with amber, cedar, patchouli, vetiver, moss, leather and cypriol notes.

After visiting Saks, I headed towards Nordstrom to try Kiton Black. I remembered when I googled this cologne's name, the Seattle-based uber luxury store popped up, and its web site showed that it sold it. This fragrance did receive rave reviews from fragrance experts as well as consumers. It opens with bergamot, lemon, red berry and violet leaves. The heart of this cologne is violet, cyclamen, cardamom and cedarwood. And, finally dries to vetiver, amber, leather and tonka bean.

After walking a few minutes, I finally arrived to my destination, Nordstrom. I went to the men's fragrance counter and asked an elegant Middle Eastern fragrance expert about Kiton Black. She found it and handed it to me. I sprayed it on a sample sheet and sniffed it. What was my reaction? It smelled better than Bond No. 9 Saks Fifth Avenue but it lacked the Tom Ford for Men's "wow factor." It smelled too mediocre for me. I was used to luxury fragrances that were more refined. So, I was disappointed by its performance, and I immediately left Nordstrom.

Which one is the winner, and which one has been added to my collection? Of course the answer to this question is obvious - Tom Ford for Men. This fragrance retails for $60 for a 1.7 oz. bottle and $85 for a 3.4 oz. bottle. It's available at the Tom Ford Flagship Boutique and most luxury department stores and perfumeries.
